In Tulsa, Vandevers is both one of the early names in retail and one of the few department stores that survived the initial move towards suburbanization.
Vandevers was a full-line department store that provided everything a shopper could want, from expensive, high-end fashion, jewelry, and furnishings, to economical clothing and appliances. Many Tulsans have fond memories of visiting one of the Vandevers stores – downtown, at Utica Square, or Southroads – and of the multiple generations of the family involved in the business. This exhibit shares the story of the business that operated in Tulsa from before statehood until the final store closed in 1992 after 88 years of selling shoppers both their dreams and necessities.
