The first stories I wrote were puppet show scripts when I was five years old. I loved creating characters, plots, scenes, and costumes for my stories. In elementary school I wrote short stories at school and longer chapter books at home for fun. In middle school, I became very interested in creative writing, paying attention to lyricism, verse, format, and prose.
In college I studied elementary education. I also had an internship in a bilingual preschool which showed me how much fun teaching is! My senior year practice teaching was at Capitol Hill Day School, three blocks from the U.S. Capitol. My 1st and 2nd graders were really into reading and field trips; two of my favorite things as an educator! I graduated with a teaching degree and jumped right into first grade, then third grade, then substitute teaching for K-8, then K-8 school library media director.
A few years after I left teaching, I started a small online business in Tulsa selling products that relate to Tulsa’s history. Whenever I had a pop-up shop in the community, I found myself teaching about leaders, events, and Tulsa’s history. This led to writing a picture book about a hidden hero in Tulsa. I researched this person for two years before writing any of the text for the book. All the details in the research inspired me to write an ABC picture book in lyrical form about a historic highway in America.
