How to Read a Photograph
Students will examine a variety of historic photographs of Tulsa and be guided through a protocol of:
Identifying people, objects, and activities.
Interpreting what is happening in the photograph.
Imagining why the photograph was taken.
Students will then be given the opportunity to apply the protocol. Students may work in pairs of small groups to develop a written or oral narrative based on a selected photograph. This lesson is available for classroom or in “mini” format combined with a museum tour.
Site-based presentations are available Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays and are subject to availability.
Oklahoma Oil
Students will learn about the historic oil boom by viewing and reading postcards from oil fields throughout Oklahoma
Students will learn how to determine where and when a postcard originated, discover where the early oil fields were located, and read messages from men and women who lived and worked in the area. Students will have the opportunity to write a brief narrative (in postcard format) with information they have learned. This lesson is available for classroom or in “mini” format combined with a museum tour.
